Lexus Rx Limitless Concept 01

Lexus established the luxury crossover segment two decades ago with the global debut of the RX 300 at Detroit. It remains the top-selling luxury crossover despite nearly 50 competitors that have since entered the segment.

The Lexus LF-1 Limitless concept introduces a new genre of luxury vehicle: the flagship crossover. Combining high performance with unrestrained luxury, the Lexus LF-1 Limitless is a showcase of technology, innovation and the latest evolution of design at Lexus.

The innovative spirit of the Lexus LF-1 Limitless concept was created at CALTY Design Research in California. The design language is rooted in the simple yet elegant design concept dubbed “molten katana”. This design visualization fuses the organic shapes of liquid metal with the sharp edges of a traditional Japanese sword. Imagining that shift from a smooth, flowing mass into a solid, chiseled shape formed the basis for the fluid, yet aggressive design of the LF-1 Limitless concept.

Maximum comfort for every passenger was CALTY’s goal for the cabin. The Lexus LF-1 Limitless concept adheres to the Japanese tradition of omotenashi, or hospitality, welcoming all who enter with equal enthusiasm.

The front passenger space is far more open, with even fewer controls and a wide unobstructed dashboard. Those in back get the same seats as those in front with expansive legroom and individual display screens for adjusting the climate control or entertainment options.

Lighting plays a key role in the look and feel of the interior of the Lexus LF-1 Limitless Concept. Engaging the START button initiates a dramatic lighting sequence of ambient light based on which of the several available driving modes is engaged.

For a more subtle effect, the wooden door trim has tiny perforations that allow indirect light from miniature LEDs to shine and twinkle in a variety of colors. This lighting creates beautiful movement in the interior that complement the more direct overhead lights.

The Lexus LF-1 Limitless concept takes the popular crossover genre and heightened sense of performance while challenging traditional crossover SUV proportions and styling. The concept’s long hood and powerful stance give it the look of a performance sedan while maintaining the higher ride height and versatile functionality that have made crossovers the preferred choice for so many of today’s customers.

2018 Lexus LS F Sport Debuts in New York

The all-new 2018 LS —Lexus is putting an exclamation point on this signature model with the new F SPORT model. The LS F SPORT, unveiled today and on display this week at the New York International Auto Show, moves the driving emotion needle even farther with handling enhancements and a performance-infused design outside and in.

Available in petrol and hybrid powertrains, the F SPORT version of the LS, will imbue the standard model with a more engaging driving spirit through carefully applied chassis tuning and enhancements, while still emphasizing exceptional comfort.Lexus designers didn’t hold back when giving the LS its coupe-like silhouette. Developing the F SPORT grille took computer-aided design (CAD) operators some five months to achieve the desired texture and interaction with light.

As it did with the exterior, Lexus shifted the LS cabin into F SPORT spec by applying trim and features exclusive to this version. Applied to the LS, it means taking care of the driver and passengers, anticipating their needs, attending to their comfort and helping to protect them from hazards. The F SPORT adds a performance attitude to the mix.

Equipping the LS F SPORT with standard 20-inch wheels and with LDH (Variable Gear Ratio Steering and Dynamic Rear Steering to underline what F SPORT stands for. Lexus designed an all-new 3.5-litre V6 engine specifically for the new 2018 LS 500, using twin turbochargers developed through the company’s F1 technology. This new twin-turbo V6 offers V8-level performance – 415 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque – paired with the first-ever 10-speed automatic transmission in luxury sedan.

The LS 500 is undeniably quick, with a 0-60mph time of 4.5 seconds. The driver can tailor powertrain response and feel by choosing from Normal, Sport S or Sport S+ modes, and just enough of the exhaust note is heard to enhance the sporty feel.

The LS 500h F SPORT infuses high efficiency into the sporting formula. The new Multi Stage Hybrid System combines a naturally aspirated Atkinson-cycle 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with two electric motor/generators and uses a compact, lightweight lithium-ion battery. The V6 engine uses D-4S direct fuel injection, and lightweight valvetrain components, with Dual VVT-i ensuring ample torque across the engine speed range. Combined system output is 354 hp.

The Multi Stage Hybrid System allows for more electric assist at lower vehicle speeds, and it enables the LS 500h under certain conditions to operate with the petrol engine off at speeds of up to 87 mph. What’s more, this system allows the RWD LS 500h to propel from 0-60mph in 5.2 seconds – which is on par with the previous-generation V8-powered LS 460 and 3 /10th of a second faster than the AWD LS 600h.

World Premiere of The All-New Lexus LS 500h

Lexus LS 500h

The Geneva Motor Show hosts the world debut of the new Lexus LS 500h, the full hybrid version of Lexus’ new flagship sedan.

The model, revealed soon after the premiere appearance of the twin-turbo petrol V6-powered LS 500 at the 2017 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, is a further manifestation of how Lexus has reimagined the luxury sedan, presenting brave design, exhilarating performance and a sophisticated appeal to capture the imagination of forward-thinking, younger customers.

The car’s design successfully brings together the virtues of a long-wheelbase four-door sedan with a low, coupe-like profile, positioning the LS perfectly across the two growing sedan and coupe segments.

The cabin has benefited from an equally new approach, focusing on “progressive comfort,” interpreting Japanese aesthetics and craftsmanship traditions in the context of an advanced, luxurious and innovative vehicle interior such as the original door trim ornamentation. Notably the LS 500 was honoured at NAIAS with the EyesOn Design Award for excellence in interior design.

Lexus LS 500h 03

Conceived as the new global pinnacle of the Lexus brand, the LS goes beyond what the world expects from a luxury car. Chief Engineer Toshio Asahi explained: “Developing such a flagship model required a massive paradigm shift. Rather than being bound by the conventions that had defined luxury cars in the past, we aimed to create a car with innovative, emotional and sensual appeal that would draw customers’ eyes away from other luxury cars and provide entirely new values.”

The LS 500h is equipped with the new Lexus Multi Stage Hybrid System, a technology that transforms the performance and driver appeal of hybrid, providing improved responsiveness and more rewarding, linear acceleration, particularly when moving off from stationary. At the same time, the inherent fuel and emissions efficiency of Lexus Hybrid Drive has been further improved.

The powertrain features a 3.5-litre V6 Dual VVT-i V6 petrol engine and two electric motors, together delivering maximum system power of 354hp/264kW. While the LS 500 will be available in Europe exclusively as all-wheel drive model, the LS 500h will be introduced in both rear and all-wheel drive versions.

The All-New LS 500h at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show

Lexus LS 500h Hybrid 08

Following the world premiere of the LS 500 featuring a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 gas engine at this year’s Detroit Auto Show, Lexus will introduce the all-new LS 500h at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show.

At the same time, overall fuel efficiency and emissions are improved while preserving the smooth, quiet and refined drive that is a hallmark of Lexus hybrids. The Multi Stage Hybrid System will make its first appearance in the powertrain of the new LC 500h luxury coupe, which is due in Australia mid-year.

The system adds a four-stage shift device to the LS 500h’s Lexus Hybrid Drive powertrain, which features a 3.5-litre V6 dual VVT-i petrol engine and two electric motors. Its operation replicates the feel of driving with a 10-speed transmission, like that featured in the V8-powered LS 500 that was unveiled at last month’s Detroit auto show.

It delivers a more direct response to driver throttle inputs – a quality that is particularly noticeable when accelerating from standstill. The result is a linear, direct and continuous acceleration feel, making for a more rewarding driving experience.

Fourth Generation Lexus RX Recorded Substantial Sales Growth

Lexus RX

Lexus’ fourth generation RX luxury SUV has underlined its appeal in the marketplace by recording substantial sales growth on last year.

July 2016 sales of the RX were up nearly 40 per cent on the corresponding 2015 figure.

Lexus Australia chief executive Peter McGregor attributed the growth to the RX’s striking design, high level of specification and newly introduced turbo model.

“The RX underwent a very significant change for the fourth generation model, delivering exceptional design including an award-winning interior, high levels of efficiency, driving performance and luxury features, all of which have found favour among our valued customers,” Mr McGregor said.

“It has also grown in size with no impact on its sleek profile and dramatic styling, which has widened its appeal and added to its versatility.”

The RX model line begins with the RX turbo, followed by the V6-powered RX 350 and hybrid-powered RX 450h.

Lexus’ July result indicated positive growth for other model lines including the LX, sales of which were up more than 62 per cent on last year.

Total sales for the brand were also up six per cent year to date.

Moving a Mountain to Film the New LC 500

Lexus LC 500 12

The LC 500 coupe enjoyed a sensational debut earlier this year as the stand-out star of the Detroit motor show, before its hybrid version, the LC 500h was revealed at the Geneva motor show. Now the dynamic brilliance of its design and engineering are being celebrated in a short film that helps build anticipation towards the car’s market launch next year.

Shot in a remote area of Spain’s Sierra Nevada mountain range, the film brought together the talents of leading motion designer Edgar Davey and a team from projection mapping specialists QED Productions, led by Paul Whigfield. Davey produced a set of visuals that takes the viewer under the skin of the LC 500, evoking elements of its 467bhp V8 engine and its world-first 10-speed transmission. He had to be sure each could be faithfully rendered when projected against the jagged mountainside – the film’s natural backdrop and the canvas for Davey’s artistry – requiring precise positioning of each camera and projector.

In the movie, the Lexus LC 500 accelerates on a twisting mountain road and as it passes, its thrilling engine note shatters the rockface to reveal a battery of pounding pistons and spinning gears. In another scene a face in the mountain side turns to watch the car speed by.

The new LC 500 is currently touring Europe for a series of preview events. Next is the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it will make its UK debut. Follow #LConTour for further updates.
